Southern Flair Bridal Affair at the Charles Mack Citizen Center

This year we were excited to be part of the Southern Flair Bridal Affair at the Charles Mack Citizen Center.  After taking a break from weddings to raise our babies, we are back in full gear and boy did you guys welcome us with open arms.  It was so exciting to have folks come by our table and rave about how much they love our work.  The best part was seeing clients who had come to us years ago for baby portraits and are now planning weddings for that same baby!

It is so neat to see how the styles and products have changed since the weddings we did years ago!!  We are loving the new albums and products that are available and we enjoy taking all of the “fun” shots that were never considered necessary in the wedding albums of old.  One thing that has not changed is the Crider Commitment to Excellence.  We still believe in giving you the absolute best experience and quality products that you deserve.  We usually take a team of at least 2-3 people when we photograph a wedding so we don’t miss a thing!!

The best compliment a mother-of-the-bride told us recently is that when she hired Crider’s she was relieved to know that she did not have to worry one bit on the day of the wedding because she knew we would exceed her expectations.  It is clients like that who keep us going!!

  1. How do I pick a good photographer when there are hundreds listed in my area?

Search around for photographers that fit your style. Once you’ve got a few favorite photographers, narrow it down to a handful of favorites, and set up a time to meet them. Make sure you’re meeting with the person who will be actually photographing your wedding. You have to like, trust and get along with your photographer – that way you can leave the magic of photo making in the photographer’s hands. You’ll be spending many hours with them during your wedding day, you want to make sure you like your photographer just as much as the images they capture!

  1. How many photos do I get?

Most wedding photographers produce between 50-100 images for every hour of photographer they provide. Four hundred photos may seem like a lot, but this is a once in a lifetime event that they are preserving. You want to make sure the memories and moments are being captured even when you’re mingling with your guests.

  1. You love photos with blurry backgrounds? You love images that are soft and pastel? You love black and white? How do you get that look?

Some of those looks can be achieved digitally; others require professional knowledge that only a handful of photographers can provide. Be sure to ask your photographer how they achieve their look and don’t be afraid to ask about their training and credentials. It is also a good idea to ask for references from other brides who have used their services.

  1. Why is wedding photography so expensive?

This is a question that we hear a lot and sometimes it’s hard to justify; but let me explain what the cost is for. Many wedding photographers carry over $15,000 worth of equipment and the work extends well beyond the time they are at the actual event. There are numerous hours of prep-work and editing your images can take days. Add insurance, taxes, software, advertising, albums, repair, shipping and studio expenses and you will find that the actual amount the photographer makes is significantly less.

  1. I keep hearing about ‘shoot and burn’ photography. What is it?

‘Shoot and burn’ is slang for photographing a wedding and burning it straight to a CD without post-processing and/or any other products offered. It is super cheap and for a good reason. Bad lighting isn’t corrected, distracting elements aren’t removed, and very little retouching is done to make the images look their best.

Digital files may be a selling point for you, but look for a photographer who offers editing and printing!

  1. Speaking of printing. Do it.

Don’t let those images sit there on that nicely logoed USB drive or DVD. PRINT THEM! As a photographer, we want you to display our images, your images. You didn’t hire someone to document this important day to leave them concealed on your hard drive. Technology changes so quickly that you run the risk of losing your important day if you do not truly archive it to good quality paper prints.

Plus, you want to show them off! Make sure you hire a photographer with connections to a great professional lab that can provide you with quality products, such as portraits, canvases and albums.

  1. Do I really need to a second photographer?

No one needs a second photographer, but they can provide you with more images and a different perspective.   One photographer can’t be two or three places at once. It’s always a good idea to have that second photographer even if they’re just there for the details so that your main photographer can focus on what’s important!

  1. How far in advance should I book a wedding photographer?

Many in-demand wedding photographers book weddings at over a year in advance. As it gets closer to your wedding date, it will be harder to book your first-choice photographer so contact them and meet with them as soon as you can.

So let’s recap what we’ve learned…

  • Do find a photographer that fits your style
  • Don’t be afraid to ask about your photographer’s training, credentials and experience
  • Know how many files to expect and what kind of editing will be done to them
  • Know who, if any one, will be helping your photographer
  • Understand that you’re paying for so much more than just someone to take pictures
  • And print! Print! Print!…you’ve paid for the photos, display them proudly!

Super Bowl 50! Here we come!  We’re so excited for our home team, the Carolina Panthers, as they hit the road for California!  We know many of you are proud members of the Panther Nation and we want to help you show your pride!  Starting this Friday, we are offering family mini sessions with a portion of the proceeds going to support the HEARTest Yard Foundation.

PantherHeartestYard
The HEARTest Yard Foundation was started by Greg Olsen and his wife Kara as parents who have experienced the heartbreaking reality of having a child with congenital heart disease.  The foundation works in conjunction with Levine Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center and helps to provide CHD children and their families with in-home, private nursing care, psychical therapy and speech therapy among other benefits.

Show your pride and support a great cause!!

Throughout the years, we encounter other small businesses in the community that really seem to share our values of excellence in service and quality.  We love to patronize those businesses and many times, our professional relationship becomes a wonderful friendship as well.  Often these businesses work with us to offer specials to our clients and allow us to display portraits and literature in their offices or stores.  With that said, we would like to share our friends with you.  As the year goes on, we will be sharing stories of the partnerships we have formed with businesses in the area.  We encourage you to check them out and of course, tell them you heard of them from Crider’s!

Our featured business partner for January is Daveste Vineyards of Troutman, NC.  If you have not been to this local winery, you must check it out sometime.  We first approached them when we saw the beautiful venue they maintain.  We are always looking for new, beautiful places to photograph and we knew that this area would be perfect.  It offers a beautiful landscape of vineyards and a rock waterfall complete with a bridge and floral landscaping. Daveste is also becoming a popular site for weddings and they host many events, including live music on most Thursdays.

If you’re looking for a place to spend a quiet afternoon, head just a little ways out to Troutman and step foot into this scenic oasis.  Sample their wines, and grab a glass of your favorites to enjoy out on the patio or in one of their covered verandas.  They do have a few snack items available, but bringing your own is also encouraged.  The atmosphere is perfect for couples or a girl’s getaway!

If you would like to learn more about Daveste Vineyards, you can visit their website at www.davestevineyards.com.

If you are interested in learning more about family portraits sessions at Daveste Vineyards, be sure to call us soon.  They book up very quickly in the spring and we want to be able to accommodate our most valued customers!

Photo Classes are Coming!

January 7th, 2016

In the fall of last year, we launched our photo workshops with our Beginner’s Class.  Phillip was very excited to share the knowledge that he has accumulated over 20 years back to our clients and friends.  We were very pleased that the classes were met with such success.  Time after time we have had students return to us exclaiming how thrilled they were to put their knowledge to use and we think this is awesome!

With such a high caliber of digital SLR cameras becoming available to the general public, there is a need for hands-on training, and why not receive that from a professional in the business?  The neat thing is that these classes apply to everyone!!  So far, we have had students as young as 12 years and 16 years old!  The class is modeled specifically to the participants and what they are wanting to learn.  For example, we had one mom who wanted to learn how to better photograph her sons’ sports photos at the game.  The 16 year old has been photographing race cars and wanted to learn more about how to set his camera for high speed.  Phillip spends time in each of the workshops going over the manual settings of the camera, as well as the basics of photography.  You’ll not only leave with a better understanding of how to use the camera, but also how to better compose your photographs and  adjust for different lighting situations.  Best of all, we keep our classes small so that Phillip has time with each individual student to work with them on anything they need.

Because everything is more fun with a friend, we are offering a $99 “Bring A Friend” special for 2016. Anyone who signs up for one of our 2016 classes, and has a friend do the same, they each will receive the class for $99. The regular price is $149 so that is $100 savings between the two of you!!  Click here to register!  Since class size is small, they will fill up quickly!  Don’t miss out!

A Professional Business Headshot is not an option, it’s a necessity!

Your business headshot says more about you than you think.
Do you look approachable? Friendly? Professional?
Or is your headshot amateurish, out of focus, and giving off the wrong impression of you? In many cases, your business headshot is the first impression people will have of you, so you must consider how you wish to be perceieved. It doesn’t matter if you are the CEO of major company, run your own business, or just an associate; Your headshot is vital in showing people who you are, how you represent yourself, and/or how you represent your company.

Maybe you’re looking for employment, and trying to find a way to stand out of the crowd. According to a Jobvite Social Recruiting Survey, 90% of human resources managers admit to checking job candidate’s LinkedIn or Social Media pages before even inviting them for an interview. 90%. With the wrong headshot, you could be killing your career opportunities before even getting to an interview!

We offer a range of styles for your images, from a professional corporate style to a more natural, relaxed style. You do not necessarily have to have it taken in a studio. We can photograph you on-location in your working environment e.g. at your office, in front of your home, outside etc. You need these images to work for you – you need to invest time and money in getting them done properly and professionally.

As soon as you have the new portraits taken, change out all the previous pictures with the new ones as soon as possible! This update will help change people’s perception of you (for the better!), and maybe even catch the eyes of new clientele. Do yourself a favor, and update your professional image!
